XFree86 ? or X.org ?

it was my impression that video hardware only had one overlay (that the 
definition of an overlay implies that there is only one...), if not, you'd 
have problems of what overlay comes in front of the other.

if you're talking about one overlay that is shared between multiple programs, 
that's a totally different story...

NOTE: all the above is pure speculation... beware
