cursory investigation shows mplayer's copy it is based on an older
faad2 snapshot. i compared Mike's update (2004-09-15) to the last good
GPL'ed faad2 (2005-01-30) and they are basically the same.

it is strange however that faad2 seems to have dropped support of SSE
optimized routines in newer cvs versions (as current xine cvs)

i guess the only changes in mplayer are related to int types (we fixed
that in xine too) and a newer output_to_pcm routine. i don't know if
that could possibly explain the problem with 5.1 audio some users have
though.
