How about:

1) Option to tell mplayer which config file to use, ie: -conf ~/file.conf
2) Option that looks in the current folder (or same folder as movie) for  
<movietitle>.conf, similar
      to .sub option currently supported 
3) Let the user specify the options on the commandline like we currently do, 
and create a    symlink/alias
themselves for that file.  ie: nimplayer="mplayer -ni <your options>"
