Most today's DVDs are anamorphic 16:9 carrying 2.35:1 video, but not all. Also 
the correct cropping values may differ a bit from movie to movie, so it's 
best to checkout both cropping and scaling using mplayer with same -vop 
commandline and adding -x <scalew> -y <scaleh> and your favourite video out. 
To verify the aspect you should take a look at some circular objects and see 
if they're really circular or more egg-like. In this case correct the 
vertical scaling until the object become circular in a stepsize of 16pixels.
