Sorry I forgot to say I run fedora core 3 Kernel 2.6.10 As far as I saw on a web site alsa should be default for version 2.6 Ivar
Is this under Gnome or KDE? Looks like maybe you are using a sound server too... if so, then you'd have to do -ao arts or esound
Can you post the full command line you're using, and what MPlayer gives you (full output)?

Hello , thank you for your answer
Actually I manage to get some sound through the headphone, like the system bell.
WHen I do mplayer -ao help I get a list of drivers
mpegpes Mpeg-PES audio output
oss OSS/ioctl audio output
null Null audio output
pcm RAW PCM/WAVE file writer audio output
plugin Plugin audio output
I have tried to write mplayer -ao oss:dsp-device:dsp1 and dsp
The oss driver has only this option to chose dsp-device, does is stand for digital signal processing ? Can someone telle me which of these drivers to use to be able to direct the sound to the usb head phones ?

Hello, I have a problem using USB headset for mplayer. On programs like skype I can choose to get the sound through the USB headset. But I can not make this work for mplayer it will only play through the speaker. I use Fedora Core 3 Best regards, Ivar

Hello!
Can you play sound via USB headset in xmms or mpg123 or ogg123? Most likely, you use wrong audio system in mplayer. Try different -ao modules. type "mplayer -ao help" to see mplayer's capabilities.
